Gland, Switzerland, 12 January 2023 (IUCN) – The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) today welcomed the news that its President, Razan Al Mubarak, has been appointed as UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for the COP28 Presidency by the government of the United Arab Emirates, host of the UN Climate Change Conference COP28 in 2023.

“The appointment of IUCN President Razan Al Mubarak as UN Climate Change High-Level Champion is a strong and very encouraging signal to the world that the climate and biodiversity crises are interlinked and must be tackled together,” said IUCN Director General, Dr Bruno Oberle. “With her expertise and experience, as well as her mandate from IUCN Members, Razan is uniquely positioned to champion Nature-based Solutions that deliver benefits for climate adaptation and mitigation while conserving nature and biodiversity.”

Razan Al Mubarak’s mandate as UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP28, which she will fulfill in addition to her role as IUCN President, was announced in the UAE on 12 January 2023. In her role as High-Level Champion, Razan will work alongside UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP27 Mahmoud Mohiedin to bridge efforts from COP27 to COP28 in the UAE in 2023. Their priority will be to mobilise climate action among non-state actors, including cities, businesses, NGOs and investors, through three key functions: advocacy, representation, and fundraising.
