Rwanda’s Environmental Restoration Tour: A Testament to Success and Inspiration for the Future

The recent “Environment Restoration at 30” tour organized by the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) is a shining example of how far dedication to conservation efforts can take a nation. As we celebrate 30 years of environmental restoration, it is crucial to reflect on the achievements that have been made and the lessons that can be learned for the future.

Statistics show that from 1956 to 1996 Rwanda lost 65% of its forest area and in the last 30 years Rwanda has achieved the goal of reforesting 30.4% of the country’s area.

Allowing young people to witness firsthand the progress that Rwanda has made in conservation over the past three decades is a powerful way to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.

By immersing them in the beauty of restored landscapes and the thriving biodiversity that now calls Rwanda home, REMA instilled a sense of pride and responsibility in these young participants.

The weeklong activities leading up to World Environment Day on 5 June, 2024, have provided valuable insights for all involved.

From tree planting initiatives to educational workshops, this tour has shown that effective environmental restoration requires a multi-faceted approach that engages communities, government agencies, and youth alike.

As we look towards the future, it is clear that Rwanda’s commitment to environmental conservation is unstoppable and by involving an active young generation is a proof that Rwanda’s move will continue to yield positive outcomes for today and the future.
