Governor Mugabowagahunde Urges Youth to Take the Lead in Preserving History and Combating Genocide Ideology

Northern Province Governor, Mugabowagahunde Maurice, has called on Rwandan youth to take a leading role in preserving the history of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, urging them to actively reject genocide ideology and champion unity as the country marks the 32nd commemoration.

This powerful message was delivered during the commemoration held on this 22, April 2026 at the Cour d’Appel de Ruhengeri Genocide Memorial, an event organized by youth volunteers and attended by various leaders, survivors, and residents.

Preceded by a solemn Walk to Remember that started from GOICO market in Ruhengeri town and concluded at the memorial site. Participants moved in reflecting on the painful history while honoring the innocent victims. Upon arrival, leaders and youth paid tribute by bowing in respect to those laid to rest at the memorial.

Welcoming the attendees, Musanze District Mayor Claudien Nsengimana expressed deep sympathy to survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsi, encouraging them to remain resilient. He stressed that Kwibuka is a moment to remember, reflect, and restore dignity to victims who were brutally killed, particularly young people who lost their lives simply because of who they were.

In his key message , Governor Mugabowagahunde emphasized the critical role of young people in safeguarding Rwanda’s future. He urged them to learn the country’s history by visiting genocide memorials, to stand firmly against divisionism and genocide ideology, and to actively promote unity and resilience through national values such as Ndi Umunyarwanda.

The event showcased the growing commitment of youth in preserving Rwanda’s memory and contributing to nation-building. Their active role in organizing the commemoration reflected a strong dedication to keeping the lessons of the past alive.
