Musanze: Maternity Waiting Home Expected to End Delays in Accessing Maternal Health Services

In effort to strengthen the healthcare system and bring essential services closer to the population, maternity waiting homes are being constructed across different sectors, including at Karwasa Health Post in Cyuve Sector, Musanze District. These facilities, known locally as “inzu z’ababyeyi,” are expected to play a transformative role in improving maternal healthcare by reducing delays that have long affected expectant mothers.
For years, many women especially those living in remote areas have faced serious challenges in accessing timely medical care during childbirth. Long distances to health centers, lack of reliable transport, and sudden onset of labor have often placed both mothers and newborns at risk. The construction of maternity waiting homes aims to address these barriers by providing a safe place where pregnant women can stay as they approach their delivery dates.

The maternity waiting home at Karwasa Health center is among those expected to significantly improve service delivery. Once fully operational, it will allow expectant mothers to remain close to skilled healthcare providers, ensuring quick response in case of labor or complications. This initiative is aligned with national efforts to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality while promoting safe childbirth practices.
Women in the community have expressed strong optimism about the impact these facilities will have on their lives.
Philomene UWIDUTIJE , mother of one , said: “We used to struggle a lot, especially when labor started at night and there was no transport. These maternity homes will help us stay near health services and avoid dangerous delays.”

Another mother, Anne Marie MUSANABERA, emphasized the relief the new development brings: “This is a big step for us as women. Staying close to a health facility before delivery will help prevent complications caused by arriving late. It will truly change our lives.”
Health experts highlight that maternity waiting homes are a proven solution in improving access to maternal services, particularly in rural settings. By bridging the gap between communities and healthcare facilities, they ensure that mothers receive timely, professional care when they need it most.

Construction progresses in various areas, residents of Musanze District are hopeful that these maternity waiting homes wil improve healthcare access and restore confidence among families, knowing that safe delivery services are within reach, the initiative reflects a strong commitment to protecting the lives of mothers and children where delays in accessing maternal health services will be eradicated.
