Pope Leo XIV Calls for Unity and Dialogue as New Ambassadors including Rwanda’s Urujeni Present Credentials at the Vatican
On Thursday, May 21, 2026, Pope Leo XIV received the credentials of newly appointed ambassadors accredited to the Vatican from eight countries: Sierra Leone, Bangladesh, Yemen, Rwanda, Namibia, Mauritius, Chad, and Sri Lanka.
During the ceremony, Pope Leo XIV asked the diplomats to convey his message of friendship, respect, and prayers to the leaders and citizens of their respective countries.
The Holy Father called on nations and diplomats to rebuild trust in international relations, emphasizing that diplomacy should go beyond polite speeches and formal explanations. He stressed that true dialogue requires a “conversion of heart” and a commitment to promoting the common good rather than individual interests.
In his address, Pope Leo XIV also reflected on the approaching Feast of Pentecost, recalling how the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, transforming fear into courage and division into unity through the ability to speak in different languages.
The Pope expressed his desire for that same “spirit of unity” to inspire the diplomatic world, encouraging nations to build relationships based on mutual respect, openness, and shared responsibility for the advancement of humanity.
He reaffirmed a message he previously delivered to the diplomatic corps earlier this year, warning that in a world where peace is often pursued through displays of military power, there is an urgent need to strengthen “diplomacy founded on dialogue and mutual understanding.”
Pope Leo XIV emphasized that genuine dialogue requires truthfulness and the rejection of hateful rhetoric and manipulation, noting that honest communication is essential for resolving conflicts and rebuilding trust between nations and peoples.
He stated, “No nation, family, or international institution can claim to be just and humane if it measures success only by power or wealth while ignoring the poor and marginalized.”
The Pope further highlighted that Christ’s love for the poor, the weak, and the forgotten should inspire humanity to reject selfishness and indifference toward vulnerable people.
According to Pope Leo XIV, this spirit of solidarity and service should guide the work of diplomats and international organizations so they may become instruments of reconciliation and peaceful coexistence.
He also noted that at a time when the world continues to experience divisions caused by political conflicts and national interests, international organizations must become more representative, effective, and committed to serving the unity of the global community.
