Rwanda-Japan Climate Partnership Targets Clean Cooking Revolution in Gakenke District

A major climate resilience initiative aimed at reducing dependence on biomass energy and strengthening Rwanda’s response to climate change has officially been launched in Gakenke District through a partnership involving DUHAMIC-ADRI, the International Organization for Migration (IOM Rwanda), and local authorities.

The project, titled “Enhancing Adaptation and Mitigation Capacities to Climate Change and Extreme Weather Events in Rwanda,” seeks to promote clean cooking solutions as part of broader efforts to protect communities from the devastating impacts of climate change and environmental degradation.

Implemented by DUHAMIC-ADRI in collaboration with Gakenke District, REMA, and IOM Rwanda, the initiative is funded by the Government of Japan and is expected to play a key role in reducing the heavy reliance on biomass energy, particularly firewood and charcoal, which continue to contribute to deforestation and environmental destruction.

The launch event brought together government officials, development partners, and community representatives committed to advancing sustainable environmental practices and improving livelihoods in rural communities.

The delegation was led by DUHAMIC-ADRI Executive Secretary Benjamin Muhigirwa alongside UJIKAWA Takashi, Programs Manager at IOM Rwanda. They were welcomed by the Mayor of Gakenke District, Mukandayisenga Vestine, who praised the initiative as a timely intervention aligned with Rwanda’s national climate resilience and green growth ambitions.

Officials emphasized that promoting clean cooking technologies will not only help reduce environmental pressure but also improve public health, especially for women and children who are most exposed to harmful smoke from traditional cooking methods.

The project also aims to strengthen community capacities in climate adaptation and mitigation while supporting Rwanda’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection.

The Government of Japan’s support through IOM Rwanda further reflects growing international cooperation in helping vulnerable communities build resilience against climate-related challenges while accelerating the transition toward cleaner and safer energy solutions in Rwanda.
