Shyira Sky Bridge Opens New Chapter of Hope and Connectivity for Gakenke and Nyabihu Residents
Joy and celebration swept across residents of Gakenke and Nyabihu on Wednesday, May 21, 2026, as leaders and communities officially inaugurated the long-awaited Shyira pedestrian suspension bridge, a transformative infrastructure project expected to redefine mobility, trade, and access to essential services between the two districts.
Stretching across the Mukungwa River, the new bridge connects Mugunga Sector in Gakenke District to Shyira Sector in Nyabihu District, ending years of hardship that residents endured while crossing dangerous routes, especially during rainy seasons. The project was implemented through a partnership between Gakenke District, Nyabihu District, and FIKA (formerly Bridges to Prosperity).
The bridge was officially inaugurated by the Vice Mayor of Gakenke District in charge of Economic Development, Aimé François Niyonsenga, alongside representatives from Nyabihu District and FIKA.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, local leaders described the bridge as a life-changing solution that will strengthen social and economic ties between the two neighboring districts. Residents are expected to benefit from easier transportation, safer movement, faster access to healthcare, and improved trade opportunities.
For many families living near the Mukungwa River, the bridge represents far more than infrastructure it symbolizes safety, dignity, and economic progress.
“I used to spend a lot of time looking for a safe way to cross the river whenever I wanted to take produce to Vunga Market, during heavy rains, it became almost impossible. This bridge is going to improve our business activities and increase our income.” said Odette Ujeneza, a resident of Mugunga Sector. “
Another resident, Jean Mukunzi from Shyira Sector, expressed gratitude for the project, noting that access to healthcare will now become easier for many people seeking treatment at Shyira Hospital.
“We struggled greatly when taking sick people across the river, especially at night or during bad weather, this bridge will save lives and make movement between our communities much safer and faster.” he said.
Residents also highlighted that the bridge will facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce to Vunga Market, one of the region’s important trading centers, helping farmers reduce transport challenges and connect more easily with buyers.
Vice Mayor Aimé François Niyonsenga urged residents to protect and maintain the bridge, especially those who participated in its construction, emphasizing that safeguarding the infrastructure will ensure long-term benefits for future generations.
