Rwanda Approves National Artificial Intelligence Centre to Accelerate Innovation and Knowledge-Based Economic Growth
The Cabinet chaired by H.E President of Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame has approved the establishment of the National Artificial Intelligence Centre, a strategic institution expected to spearhead innovation, digital transformation, and the country’s transition toward a knowledge-based economy.
The decision was announced during a Cabinet meeting held on Monday, June 8, 2026, at Village Urugwiro. The newly established centre will serve as a national hub for advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, fostering innovation, attracting investment, and developing digital solutions aimed at enhancing public service delivery and economic competitiveness.
The initiative reflects Rwanda’s growing ambition to harness emerging technologies as key drivers of sustainable development, productivity, and job creation. Through the centre, the government seeks to strengthen the country’s capacity to develop and deploy AI-powered solutions across various sectors while creating an enabling environment for innovators and technology investors.
During the same meeting, the Cabinet approved the Draft Finance Law for the 2026/27 fiscal year, which prioritizes agricultural productivity, industrial development, employment creation, and the strengthening of economic resilience.
Cabinet members were also briefed on the regional Ebola situation and noted that Rwanda has reinforced preventive measures, including enhanced border screening, public awareness campaigns, and strengthened hygiene protocols. Authorities confirmed that no Ebola cases have been detected in Rwanda.
On international cooperation, the Cabinet approved several laws and agreements related to financing and grants for the Muvumba Water Project, refugee support initiatives, urban transport development, and disaster risk management programs.
Additional agreements endorsed include a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement between Rwanda and Botswana, as well as air services agreements with Algeria, Morocco, Senegal, the United Kingdom, and Northern Ireland, aimed at boosting connectivity and economic cooperation.
The meeting also approved amendments related to the Nile Basin Initiative, mining licenses, and the lease of state-owned land in Karongi District to Zipline Rwanda Ltd to support strategic development projects.
Furthermore, Cabinet approved the accreditation of new ambassadors and representatives of international organizations in Rwanda, including those from the European Union, Austria, and IFAD.
Rwanda also secured another major international engagement after Cabinet approved preparations to host the 38th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol in November 2026, reinforcing the country’s growing role in global environmental governance.
