From the Frozen North to the Shores of Central Africa: The Extraordinary Journey of the American Rosary Airlift

Amidst the diplomatic whirlwind of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, a profoundly human and spiritual mission quietly reached a milestone. In a brief yet poignant encounter on the sidelines of global politics, Queens native Mr. Victor Mooney formally handed over hundreds of American-collected rosaries to the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea to the United Nations.

Destined originally for Pope Leo XIV’s final Mass in Equatorial Guinea earlier this year, these beads of prayer tell a remarkable story of geography and devotion. Gathered from every corner of the United States—stretching from the sun-drenched coasts down south to the snow-swept wilderness of Alaska—the collection represents a tapestry of American faith.

Receiving the collection was H.E. Simeon Oyono Esono Angue, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and the Diaspora, alongside H.E. Mr. Anatolio Ndong Mba, Permanent Ambassador for Equatorial Guinea to the UN. The brief handover took place just moments before the high-ranking delegation had to rush back into the grueling schedule of UN high-level meetings, underscoring the urgency and global significance of their diplomatic visit.

Yet, for Mr. Mooney, the handover of the rosaries was just one chapter in a larger, awe-inspiring narrative of transatlantic perseverance.

Also on the horizon is the ultimate resting place for theSpirit of Malabo—the very rowboat Mr. Mooney famously used to conquer the Atlantic Ocean on his fourth grueling attempt, rowing from the Canary Islands off the coast of West Africa all the way to New York’s Brooklyn Bridge. Generously financed by the government of Equatorial Guinea, the vessel of resilience is now one step closer to finding a permanent home in Rome.

According to correspondence shared with the Foreign Minister from Ms. Barbara Jatta, Director of the Vatican Museums (Musei Vaticani), the boat’s journey may not end in the heart of Rome. Given the “evocative power and prestige of the vessel,” Ms. Jatta noted that future explorations could lead to an alternative placement at Castel Gandolfo. There, surrounded by the historic papal summer residence, theSpirit of Malabowould find a presentation perfectly harmonized with its grand symbolic and dimensional characteristics.
