Italy’s G7 Presidency: Tackling AI Risks and Advancing African Development

Supporting African development and addressing the risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI) will be two key themes for Italy during its one-year presidency of the Group of Seven, according to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Meloni added that Italy would continue to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia and warned that a further escalation of the conflict in the Middle East could have “unimaginable consequences.”

At the beginning of January, Italy assumed the rotating presidency of the G7, which includes the United States, Canada, Japan, Germany, France, Britain, and Italy.

Throughout the year, it will host a number of ministerial meetings, including a leaders’ summit in June. Meloni, on the other hand, stated that she hoped to hold a special session on artificial intelligence before June.

“I am extremely concerned about the impact (of AI) on the labor market,” she said at a news conference to mark the end of the year, which was postponed from last month due to her illness.

“Today we are faced with a revolution where (human) intellect is in danger of being replaced.”

She stated that supporting African development would be a major focus of her G7, stating that it was critical to boost local economies and living standards in order to deter would-be migrants from traveling to Europe.

“What I believe Africa requires is not charity. In Africa, what needs to be done is to foster cooperation and serious strategic relationships as equals rather than predators. What Africa needs to do is defend the right not to have to emigrate… and this is done through investments and a strategy.”
