Reforesting Rwanda: Launch of the 2024-2025 National Tree Planting Season

Huye, October 14, 2024 – Rwanda Forestry Authority (RFA) is thrilled to announce the commencement of the 2024-2025 National Tree Planting Season, set to launch on October 26 in Rwamagana District. This annual initiative stands as a testament to the country’s unwavering commitment to combat climate change and restore the green beauty of Rwanda.

Since its start in 1975, Tree Planting Day has served as a reminder of the essential role trees play in people’s lives—supporting biodiversity, purifying air, and enhancing livelihood of various communities. This year, Rwanda aims to plant an ambitious 65,225,951 seedlings, comprising both native and exotic tree species. This endeavor will not only restore damaged forests but also bolster agricultural practices, protect vital river ecosystems, and provide crucial habitats for wildlife.

The theme for this year’s tree planting season, “Plant a Tree, Nurture It, Save the Planet,” resonates with a shared responsibility to care for our Earth. It further emphasizes that each of us has a part to play in nurturing our environment for future generations.

To kick off this vital season, a series of engaging activities will take place, designed to boost community morale and raise awareness about the importance of tree planting. On October 25, an energetic football match will unfold at Cercle Sportif in Kigali, featuring teams from various governmental and non-governmental organizations. This event will not only promote teamwork spirit but will also highlight the joy and camaraderie that comes from working together toward a common goal. Following the match, a gala dinner at Serena Hotel will celebrate our collective achievements. Attendees will enjoy a virtual tour showcasing the profound impact of tree planting over the past seven years, complemented by inspiring stories from farmers and insightful talks from prominent figures in the environmental sector.

The official tree planting ceremony will occur on October 26 in Kamamana Village, Munyaga Sector of Rwamagana District, during the monthly “Umuganda.” Volunteers from all walks of life will gather to plant trees, embodying their dedication to nurturing the country of a Thousand Hills.

RFA seizes this opportunity to extend a heartfelt invitation to all Rwandans, friends, and partners to join us in this important mission. By coming together, we can make a significant impact in restoring our forests and ensuring a vibrant future for the generations to come. Let us unite in the spirit of environmental stewardship, protecting our planet through the simple yet powerful act of tree planting and community service.
