My Home, My Village: The Transformation of Xiajiang Village

As an international student at Zhejiang University of Science and Technology, I had the unique opportunity to visit Xiajiang Village in Chun’an County, Hangzhou. This trip was a much-anticipated break after a rigorous semester and an exciting chance to see firsthand how sustainable rural development can transform a once-forgotten community. Xiajiang Village, now recognized as the “World’s Best Tourism Village,” is a prime example of how collaboration between the government and the people can turn the tide for rural communities.
The journey to Xiajiang was a thrilling adventure that took about 3 hours by bus, with our anticipation growing by the minute. Every student, eager to explore this rural heaven, couldn’t help but marvel at the breathtaking scenery as we navigated the winding roads of Zhejiang province. The excitement was palpable, not only because we were enjoying a much-needed break, but because we were about to witness a remarkable success story in sustainable development that could inspire villages worldwide. As we approached our destination, the sense of wonder only grew stronger, and we were filled with curiosity about the secrets behind this village’s transformation.

Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted by one of the former village leaders, who had kindly arranged a sumptuous meal for us. The spread was nothing short of a feast for the senses—fresh fish, succulent chicken, steaming hot pot, and a variety of local delicacies. Fish, as the primary dish, holds a special significance for the village and served as a perfect introduction to its unique culture and cuisine. After satisfying our appetites with the delicious meal, we set off on our village tour. It didn’t take long for us to notice the dramatic changes in the village’s appearance. Xiajiang, once a remote agricultural backwater, now boasts modern, beautifully constructed houses. The stunning transformation left us all wondering how the villagers had funded this revolution. Our guide soon led us to the oldest classroom in the village, where we were transported back in time to a period when education was limited and infrastructure was rudimentary. My schoolmates enthusiastically snapped pictures, curious to compare the past with the present.
It was then that we gathered for a more detailed briefing on the village’s development, which had unfolded in three distinct stages:
Infrastructure and Public Services
The first step in Xiajiang’s journey was to address the most basic of needs: sanitation. The villagers, once forced to share public toilets, had faced serious hygiene challenges. In response, the village focused on renovating homes and ensuring that every house had its own private restroom. A biodegester system was also introduced, providing electricity to homes and improving living standards across the board.
Beautification and Aesthetic Value
With the foundation of essential services in place, the village then focused on beautifying its surroundings. Better housing, thoughtful village planning, and landscaping were all part of a comprehensive strategy to improve the quality of life for residents. This was not just about making the village more visually appealing; it was about giving the people pride in their community and creating a place where they could thrive.
Economic Revitalization and Retaining Talent
The final stage of development sought to bring back those who had left the village in search of better opportunities. The government initiated programs to help former villagers establish businesses by offering low-interest loans and financial support to renovate old homes into business premises. This strategy was incredibly successful, as it not only rejuvenated the village’s economy but also helped create a sense of belonging and community spirit among those who returned.

What struck me most about Xiajiang’s transformation was the collaboration between the people and the government. The financial support from both the Chinese government and the Zhejiang administration made all the difference. Through initiatives like these, rural villages can overcome challenges that once seemed insurmountable. The success of Xiajiang Village offers a model for other communities, especially in developing countries, to emulate. It proved that when local residents and governmental bodies work together toward a common goal, monumental changes are possible.
Today, Xiajiang Village stands as a shining example of rural revitalization in China. With robust infrastructure, a pristine environment, and significantly improved incomes and well-being for its residents, Xiajiang has transformed from a humble agricultural community into a thriving modern village. This transformation is not just a local success story; it has positioned Xiajiang as a global leader in sustainable rural development. Recognized as one of the World’s Best Tourism Villages, Xiajiang has placed itself firmly on the international stage, drawing visitors from across the globe. This prestigious title not only highlights the village’s remarkable transformation but also underscores its potential for continued growth and innovation.
The international recognition has opened doors for further exchanges, promoting mutual cultural enrichment and solidifying Xiajiang’s status as a model for rural development worldwide. As I walked through the village, observing the vibrant streets, well-kept homes, and flourishing businesses, I was struck by how much Xiajiang had changed in such a short period. From a remote and underdeveloped area to a bustling tourist destination, Xiajiang has rewritten its narrative through sustainable practices, community-led initiatives, and a deep commitment to preserving its natural and cultural heritage.

This journey of transformation has inspired me deeply. The lessons I learned from Xiajiang are invaluable, enriching my understanding of sustainable development and reaffirming my belief that positive change is possible when communities unite with a shared purpose. The beauty of Xiajiang, both in its landscapes and its people, is something I will treasure forever. For international students and visitors, Xiajiang offers a powerful reminder that even the most challenging circumstances can be overcome with vision, determination, and collective effort.
