Bill Gates Visits Kigali Genocide Memorial

Kigali, Rwanda — July 20, 2026 — American billionaire and philanthropist Bill Gates visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial on Monday, paying tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

During the visit, Gates laid a wreath at the mass grave where more than 250,000 victims are buried.

He toured the memorial’s exhibits, learning about how the genocide was planned and carried out, as well as Rwanda’s subsequent journey of recovery, national unity, and resilience.

The stop at the memorial is part of Gates’ ongoing visit to Rwanda, where he is engaging with local partners on initiatives to strengthen health systems, expand economic opportunities, and advance innovation, including work in artificial intelligence and digital public infrastructure.

The Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi serves as a key site for remembrance and education, particularly during the annual Kwibuka commemorations. It honors the more than one million lives lost during the 100 days of the 1994 genocide.
