Rwanda Prime Minister Leads Delegation as UN General Assembly High-Level Week Opens in New York
NEW YORK — Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva is heading Rwanda’s delegation to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly as world leaders gather for the annual high-level week.
The high-level segment opened Monday under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
Discussions this week will cover peace and security, climate action, artificial intelligence and digital governance, health, education, and sustainable development.
The General Debate, in which member states deliver national statements from the General Assembly podium, begins Tuesday, September 22, and is scheduled to run through September 28.
More than 130 heads of state and government are expected to attend the week’s proceedings.
Rwanda’s participation comes as the United Nations faces pressure to demonstrate results on longstanding challenges, including conflicts, climate impacts, and institutional reform.
The Rwandan delegation is expected to engage in both the formal sessions and a range of bilateral and multilateral meetings on the sidelines.
Separately on Monday, Rwanda’s representative in Geneva addressed the Human Rights Council during an interactive dialogue on the situation in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The statement raised concerns over ongoing insecurity, alleged collaboration with armed groups, cross-border incidents, and inflammatory rhetoric, while calling for an impartial approach by UN mechanisms.
The high-level week continues through the end of the month, with additional events on pandemic preparedness, climate justice, and the right to development also on the calendar.
