Rwanda: Belgium will now pay taxes
Belgian Development Cooperation Minister Alexander De Croo will sign two new cooperation agreements with Guinea and Rwanda on Tuesday.
In particular, they provide that Belgium will now pay import taxes and the local purchase of goods and services in its 14 partner countries.
If “the strengthening of human rights and sustainable and inclusive economic growth are now at the heart of the Belgian strategy,” says the statement, “it also focuses more on the role of the private sector and digitization as a lever of development “.
It is in this context that Belgium wants to conclude “a new general convention of cooperation” with the 14 countries that are its partners. These new agreements provide for the payment of taxes in these countries. Belgium is now committed to giving up customary exemptions on import taxes and the local purchase of goods and services generally available to donor countries.
Indeed, “the establishment of strong tax regimes is for developing countries allows, ultimately, to finance their own development. By taking this decision, Belgium supports the tax policy of the partner countries and the mobilization of tax revenues in these countries “, explains the Belgian Ministry statement
