The “Era of Physical AI” is Here: Ericsson Report Highlights 3 Billion 5G Subscriptions and a Massive Shift in Global Mobile Traffic

STOCKHOLM — June 2026 — Global 5G subscriptions have officially surpassed the 3 billion mark, carrying half of all mobile data traffic worldwide, according to the newly released Ericsson Mobility Report for June 2026. However, as the telecommunications industry celebrates this milestone, a fundamental shift is already underway: the transition to the “Era of Physical AI,” which promises to completely rewrite how networks are utilized and dimensioned.

The AI-Driven “Uplink” Revolution

The explosive growth of generative and agentic AI is fundamentally altering mobile network traffic patterns. Historically, mobile networks have been designed for downlink-dominated activities, such as video streaming and web browsing. Today, networks are facing an unprecedented surge in uplink demand.

This shift is driven by a new class of AI-enabled devices—including smartglasses, autonomous vehicles, drones, and continuous AI agents—that act as “always-on” endpoints, constantly streaming sensor, audio, and video data to the cloud for real-time processing. An analysis of 55 global service providers revealed that 43 are already experiencing higher growth rates in uplink traffic than downlink. Ericsson’s scenario modeling suggests that under high AI-adoption conditions, uplink traffic could multiply by five times between 2025 and 2031.

5G Dominance and the 6G Horizon

The adoption of 5G continues at a rapid pace, with approximately 390 service providers globally having launched commercial services, and over 90 deploying 5G Standalone (SA) networks. By the end of 2031, 5G subscriptions are forecast to reach 6.4 billion, comprising two-thirds of all global mobile subscriptions.

As 5G matures, the industry is already laying the groundwork for its successor. Standardization discussions for AI-native 6G have begun, with the first commercial launches anticipated around 2030. These next-generation networks are expected to support massive digital twinning and wide-area mixed reality, reaching an estimated 180 million subscriptions by 2031.

Surging Data Consumption and the FWA Boom

Mobile network data traffic growth continues to exceed expectations, rising 22 percent year-over-year between Q1 2025 and Q1 2026. At the end of 2025, the global average data traffic per active smartphone reached 22 GB per month, a figure projected to nearly double to 42 GB by 2031.

Alongside mobile data, Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) has emerged as a major 5G monetization success. Currently, 71 percent of all FWA providers offer their services over 5G, marking the highest annual increase in adoption in four years. FWA connections are expected to reach 350 million by 2031, effectively serving broadband to approximately 1.4 billion people worldwide.

Moving Beyond “Best Effort” with Network Slicing

To handle complex, simultaneous demands, networks are evolving into “intelligent infrastructure” capable of delivering tailored performance. This is evidenced by a 58 percent annual growth rate in commercially available 5G SA network slicing offerings, jumping from 65 to 84 globally in just six months.

A real-world demonstration of this “differentiated connectivity” was successfully executed by SoftBank at the 2026 Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka Circuit. By utilizing network slicing on a shared 5G SA infrastructure, SoftBank delivered uninterrupted, premium connectivity for point-of-sale systems and broadcasters, even during periods of extreme congestion. Remarkably, general 5G SA users at the event still experienced downlink speeds 4.1 times faster than the previous year.

The Enterprise AI Execution Gap

Finally, the report highlights a critical execution gap in the enterprise sector. While 88 percent of enterprises recognize that their AI solutions depend on real-time data, a mere 18 percent have widely adopted the secure, reliable cellular technologies needed to support these workflows. To realize the full value of AI-led digital transformation, businesses must integrate mobile, cloud, and AI technologies to automate operations and scale capabilities securely.

“Mobile networks are no longer only about providing best-effort connectivity, they are becoming critical, intelligent infrastructure that meets diverse application needs,” noted the report’s publisher. As cross-industry collaboration deepens, Ericsson emphasizes that these future networks will need to be increasingly capable, adaptable, and resilient to sustain the incoming wave of autonomous innovation.
