Rwanda Opens ‘Urumuri’ School in Mozambique

The Embassy of Rwanda in Mozambique has launched ‘Urumuri,’ a new school dedicated to teaching Kinyarwanda and Rwandan culture to children of Rwandan families living in Mozambique, in a move aimed at strengthening cultural identity among the younger generation.

The school was officially opened on Sunday, September 20, 2026, during a ceremony attended by Rwanda’s Ambassador to Mozambique, Col (Rtd) Donat Ndamage, parents, children and representatives of the Rwandan community living in the country.

Urumuri School is expected to provide children with an opportunity to learn Kinyarwanda, the national language of Rwanda, while also gaining a deeper understanding of their cultural heritage.

The initiative responds to the importance of maintaining connections between Rwandan children growing up outside the country and their linguistic and cultural roots. Through lessons in Kinyarwanda and Rwandan culture, the school will provide a platform through which children can develop knowledge of their heritage while living in a different cultural and linguistic environment.

The launch brought together members of the Rwandan community in Mozambique, particularly parents and children who will be at the centre of the school’s activities. The participation of community representatives also highlighted the role of Rwandan families abroad in preserving and passing cultural values from one generation to another.

Ambassador Ndamage joined the community during the opening ceremony, marking the beginning of an initiative that places language and culture at the heart of efforts to nurture the identity of Rwandan children in the diaspora.

The establishment of Urumuri adds to broader efforts by Rwanda’s diplomatic missions and Rwandan communities abroad to maintain cultural ties with the country. For children born or raised outside Rwanda, learning Kinyarwanda can provide a means of communicating with relatives and maintaining a connection with the traditions and history of their country of origin.
