Rwandan Space Agency, GIZ announce a Tuition-free open machine learning training program for the use of geographical data
Kigali, Rwanda, December 19, 2022. The Rwandan Space Agency (RSA) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH announce a tuition-free course in the use of machine learning for earth observation (ML4EO) to take place in Kigali in early 2023.
The course aims to upskill data science students and working professionals towards facilitating the development of solutions that can benefit the private and public sectors in Rwanda.
The application of machine learning methods to satellite data has become more prevalent in recent years, with many prominent use-casessuch as measuring changes in natural and managed resources (e.g. crops, forests, and water bodies).
However, deployment is often limited due to a lack of skills and access to relevant data. To address this challenge, the RSA has partnered with GIZ through its “FAIR FORWARD – Artificial Intelligence for all” initiative and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) for the launch of the ML4EO training program.
The program is being jointly developed with the University of Rwanda’s Center for Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing (CGIS) and Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa).
The Chief Executive Officer of RSA, Mr. Francis Ngabo said: “This training program is an important step towards building a vibrant geospatial ecosystem in Rwanda with well-trained practitioners. We are very excited to collaborate with GIZ to see this initiative evolve.”
Talking about the program in Kigali, GIZ Rwanda Head of Cluster Digital Transformation and Digital Economy Norman Schräpel said: “We are excited to have the opportunity to support Rwanda in the development of technical skills to leverage the unprecedented abilities to analyze the ever-growing amounts of satellite data for sustainable socio-economic development.”
The training program will run for five months from February to July 2023. It will be conducted partially online and in person through the Digital Transformation Center in Kigali.
Participants will have an opportunity to develop ML4EO business models and project proposals with the best ones receiving initial funding. Applicants will be asked to complete an application and submit through the course portal.
All applicants must have a background in data science and be able to demonstrate formal or informal qualifications.
The call for applications are open until 20th January 2023. Applications can be made through .
