Golden Globe Awards 2024: A Historic Night for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer

The 81st Golden Globe Awards were a successful evening for “Barbenheimer.”
Christopher Nolan’s three-hour biopic of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist behind the Manhattan Project, won several major awards, including best motion picture drama, best director (Christopher Nolan), and best drama actor (Cillian Murphy). Ludwig Göransson, the composer, also received an award for best original score.
“Oppenheimer” and “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig’s toy-powered tale, were both crowd pleasers as the night progressed.
“Barbie” had the most nominations heading into Sunday’s ceremony, but it only took home two awards, including the inaugural award for cinematic achievement.
During their theatrical runs, moviegoers were so taken with both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” that the term “Barbenheimer” was coined to describe the phenomenon that encouraged audiences to see double features of the vastly different films.
“Succession,” “The Bear,” and “Beef” ruled the categories on television.
Max’s “Succession” won the most awards of any television show, with four. The series won best drama series for its final season, and three actors – Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, and Matthew Macfadyen – won individual awards.
FX’s “The Bear” won three awards, including best TV comedy, best comedy actor (Jeremy Allen White), and best comedy actress (Ayo Edebiri).
“Beef,” a Netflix original about a road rage incident gone wrong, also took home three awards, including best limited series and individual honors for stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun.
