Pope Francis and African Bishops: Clash of Views on Same-Sex Blessings

Pope Francis has described African bishops as a “special case” in their opposition to his decision to allow blessings for same-sex couples.

However, he remained confident that the Church’s declaration would eventually reassure everyone.

In an interview with an Italian newspaper, the Pope stated that homosexuality was viewed as “something bad” by African church leaders and their supporters.

He stated that last month’s new document, Fiducia Supplicans, was intended “to include and not divide.”

Pope Francis stated that he was not concerned about conservatives leaving the Catholic Church as a result of his reforms, claiming that talk of a schism was being led by “small ideological groups”.
