NEC President emphasizes importance of understanding presidential role before candidacy
The President of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Oda Gasinzigwa, stressed the significance of the position of the President of the Republic, urging potential candidates to fully comprehend the responsibilities before submitting their candidacy.
During a pre-campaign Press Conference with NEC leaders on June 20, 2024, Gasinzigwa emphasized that aspiring for the presidency is not an easy task as the people have high expectations from the candidate.
Gasinzigwa stated, “Seeking the presidency is a serious endeavor. The President holds a crucial position where the public expects a lot from the individual. It is important for candidates to understand the role of the President and the constitutional requirements before entering the race. This is not a position to be taken lightly.”
She further explained that NEC provided detailed explanations of the requirements for presidential candidates during the pre-candidacy period to ensure that all potential candidates were well-informed and prepared.
Out of nine initial submissions, only three candidates met the requirements and were approved: Paul Kagame from FPR Inkotanyi Community, Dr. Frank Habineza from DGPR, and independent candidate Mpayimana Philippe. Candidates had to secure 600 signatures, including 12 from each region, to qualify.
Gasinzigwa noted that the process for obtaining signatures was fair and transparent, allowing all candidates equal opportunity to gather the required support. He emphasized that despite some candidates not meeting the criteria, they were given every chance to participate in the election process.
The official campaign period will commence on Saturday, June 22, and conclude on July 13, with the election scheduled for July 14 and 15, 2024.
