Rwanda Green Fund and Ministry of Environment Sign Grant Agreements worth Rwf 5.4 billion to Enhance Climate Adaptation

The Rwanda Green Fund and the Ministry of Environment have today signed nine grant agreements with three districts and six civil society organisations to enhance Rwanda’s ability to adapt to climate change. The signing of the grant agreements, which have a total value of Rwf 5,423,012,850, marks a significant step forward in Rwanda’s effort to respond to climate change and build resilience to extreme weather events.

The nine investments being awarded grants were recently approved by the Rwanda Green Fund Board of Directors and will be funded through the Rwanda Subnational Adaptation Fund Enhanced Direct Access (EDA) Project. Financed by the Adaptation Fund, the project supports climate adaptation initiatives led by civil society organisations and local government entities that focus on practical, community-driven solutions.

The nine investments were chosen following a competitive call for proposals, which saw more than 130 submissions received. This demonstrates a strong demand for funding for adaptation focused responses to climate change.

With these new investments, we are not only supporting transformative initiatives, but also empowering communities to lead the charge in sustainable development. We look forward to seeing the positive outcomes these projects will bring in the near future,” said Teddy Mugabo, CEO of the Rwanda Green Fund.

The investments are in the fields of climate smart agriculture, small scale irrigation and sustainable land use management, and the awardees include:

• Gatsibo District – in partnership with Association pour le Développement Agro-Pastoral (ADAP)
• Ngororero District – in partnership with World Vision
• Nyanza District – in partnership with Action pour la Protection de l‟Environnement et la Promotion des Filières Agricoles (APEFA)
• Action pour la Protection de l‟Environnement et la Promotion des Filières Agricoles (APEFA) – in Bugesera District
• Rural Environment and Development Organization (REDO) – in Bugesera District
• Friends Effort to Support Youth (FESY) – in Kayonza District Association for Promotion of Vulnerable (APV) – in Bugesera District Association Rwandaise pour le Développement Endogène (ARDE-KUBAHO) – in Kamonyi District
• Caritas Kibuye – in Karongi District

The ceremony gathered representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Local Government, Rwanda Green Fund, beneficiary organisations, and key stakeholders.

Financed by the Adaptation Fund, the Rwanda Subnational Adaptation Fund Enhanced Direct Access Project supports climate adaptation initiatives led by civil society organisations and local government entities that focus on practical, community-driven solutions. In Rwanda, the project is being implemented by the Ministry of Environment through the Rwanda Green Fund.
