By TOP AFRICA NEWS TEAM

On Thursday, 30th January, 2025,  the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rwanda announced that Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe had a productive call with Israel’s Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa’ar. The two officials discussed bilateral relations between their nations and exchanged views on regional security issues.

During the call, Minister Nduhungirehe briefed his counterpart on the root causes of the ongoing crisis in the Great Lakes region, particularly highlighting the presence of the FDLR genocidal militia. He also outlined a proposed path to peace in the region, emphasizing the need for cooperation and dialogue to address the complex challenges facing the area.

In response, Foreign Minister Sa’ar expressed Israel’s support for continued dialogue aimed at bringing peace to the Great Lakes region. He also took the opportunity to discuss issues in the Middle East with Minister Nduhungirehe, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in addressing shared security concerns.

The talks between Rwanda and Israel come at a crucial time, as major powers continue to accuse Rwanda of supporting the AFC/M23 movement, which recently seized control of the city of Goma in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The region has long been plagued by violence and instability, with numerous armed groups operating in the area.

Of particular concern is the presence of the FDLR in the eastern part of the DRC, a group founded by individuals who were responsible for the genocide in Rwanda in 1994. The FDLR continues to spread genocide ideology among the Congolese population and has posed a significant threat to regional security and Rwanda specifically.

The call between Rwanda and Israel signals a commitment to cooperation and dialogue in addressing pressing security challenges in the Great Lakes region. By discussing bilateral relations and regional security issues, the two nations are taking proactive steps towards promoting peace and stability in a volatile region.
