Trump Administration Launches Historic Self-Deportation Program Offering Travel Assistance and $1,000 Stipend

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 5, 2025 — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a groundbreaking initiative aimed at encouraging illegal aliens to voluntarily return to their home countries. Through the new CBP Home App, individuals can now access financial and travel assistance, including a $1,000 stipend payable upon confirmation of their return.

The first participant has already demonstrated the program’s success, using the app to secure a flight from Chicago to Honduras. Additional flights are scheduled for the coming weeks. DHS officials emphasize that self-deportation is a safe, dignified, and cost-effective alternative to traditional enforcement methods.

“When individuals choose to self-deport, it not only avoids potential detention but also saves U.S. taxpayers approximately 70% of the usual deportation costs,” said DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. The current average expense of arrest, detention, and removal totals over $17,000 per individual.

The program incentivizes voluntary departure by deprioritizing participants for detention, provided they are actively making efforts to leave. Also, participation may preserve future legal re-entry options into the United States.

To qualify, individuals must submit an “Intent to Depart” through the CBP Home App. DHS encourages those eligible to take advantage of this opportunity, which aims to streamline the removal process while reducing costs and enhancing safety.
