Somali Government Proposes Disbanding C6+ Group

By A Yusuf

Mogadishu, Somalia, June 12, 2025-The Federal Government of Somalia has formally questioned the legitimacy of the C6+ group’s involvement in the country’s internal affairs, proposing its dissolution.

This was outlined in an official letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs addressed to James Swan, the United Nations Special Representative.

According to the letter, the C6+ was initially formed to assist Somalia during its transitional period, at a time when the country’s state institutions were still in their infancy.

However, the government argues that with Somalia now having fully functioning institutions, there is no longer a valid reason for international partners to play a direct role in domestic politics.

The Somali government stated that the C6+ has become an outdated structure whose original purpose is no longer relevant.

It urged international partners to engage with Somalia through legally recognized and mutually agreed-upon frameworks, primarily through established governmental institutions.

The C6+ group, comprising key international stakeholders, has long been involved—both directly and indirectly—in Somalia’s political landscape.

Nevertheless, the government now views this involvement as interference in the country’s internal affairs.

This development comes as Somalia continues its recovery from decades of civil wars and state collapse that began in 1991, with efforts now focused on consolidating national sovereignty and institutional independence.

On the other hand, the Somali public at large has warmly welcomed this move to hold accountable C6+ that has been interfering in the country’s future for so many years.
