Gakenke: 100 Families Settled in Kagano Model Village

In Gakenke District, in the Kagano model village in Muzo Sector, 100 families have now been settled. Residents say the initiative has become a source of improved living standards and development.

Early morning at Kagano village, young people and adults head to work on ongoing construction activities. Many see this opportunity as a foundation for economic empowerment within their households.

One resident, Jeannette Mukamana, shared, “Since moving here, life has changed for the better. Not only do we have a decent home, but many of us have found jobs that allow us to support our families.”

Another beneficiary, Emmanuel Niyonzima, expressed joy, “Getting this house and work means I can provide a stable future for my children. I’m grateful for this chance to build a better life.”

The village now accommodates 100 families. Gakenke District’s Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development, Aime Francois Niyonsenga, urged the residents to care for the infrastructure provided.

“The success of this model village depends on your commitment to maintain the facilities and uphold the values that make Kagano a beacon of progress,” he said.

Meanwhile, during a parliamentary session, Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva highlighted the government’s commitment to accelerating development through infrastructure and safer settlements.

“By focusing on modern infrastructure and planned housing, we reduce risks and create a foundation for sustainable growth,” he explained.

The Kagano Model Village project, expected to be completed by 2028, will feature 354 houses and other essential infrastructure. The project prioritizes relocating residents from unsafe living conditions, offering them opportunities for socio-economic growth.

So far, over 300 jobs have been created by the project, which has received more than 5 billion Rwandan francs in investment, achieving a 38% completion rate.
