Africa’s Sports Industry Poised for a Major Economic Breakthrough
Rwanda has opened a major continental conversation on how Africa can transform sport from a field of competition into a powerful engine for economic growth, investment and social development, with the continent’s leading sports stakeholders converging in Kigali for the SportsBiz Africa Forum 2026.
On Wednesday at the Kigali Convention Centre, Rwanda’s Minister of Sports, Nelly Mukazayire, officially opened discussions organized in partnership with the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) and SportsBiz Africa ahead of the formal launch of the SportsBiz Africa Forum 2026.
The annual forum, scheduled for September 9–13, brings together policymakers, sports leaders, investors, private-sector players and other influential stakeholders to examine the untapped potential of Africa’s rapidly growing sports industry.
The forum is designed to create a platform where decision-makers and industry players can exchange ideas, forge strategic partnerships and identify practical opportunities capable of accelerating the commercialization and professionalization of sport across the continent.
At the heart of the discussions is a broader vision of sport as more than entertainment or competition. Africa’s sports industry has significant potential to generate employment, attract investment, stimulate entrepreneurship, develop talent and create new opportunities for young people.
The gathering also provides an opportunity for African countries to explore stronger cooperation between governments, sports organizations and the private sector, particularly in areas such as sports infrastructure, investment, technology, talent development, media, marketing and event management.
By bringing these actors together, the SportsBiz Africa Forum seeks to strengthen the connection between sporting excellence and economic opportunity, while encouraging innovative approaches that can make the sports sector more sustainable and commercially viable.
For Rwanda, hosting the forum in Kigali further positions the country as a platform for high-level continental dialogue and strategic partnerships in sport. The event also reflects growing efforts across Africa to harness the power of sport to address broader development priorities.
As the forum progresses, participants are expected to advance discussions on how Africa can build a stronger, more competitive and investment-ready sports ecosystem one capable of creating jobs, empowering young people and contributing significantly to the continent’s socio-economic transformation.
