Rwanda Hosts MuseumsLab 2026 to Strengthen Global Heritage Cooperation
Rwanda has welcomed the 2026 edition of The MuseumsLab, an international annual programme bringing together museum and heritage professionals to exchange knowledge, strengthen collaboration and explore how museums and historical sites can contribute to shaping a better future.
The week-long programme, running from September 21 to 26, 2026, is designed to create a platform for participants to share experiences, ideas and innovative approaches to the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage.
MuseumsLab 2026 is organised by Museum für Naturkunde (MfN) in Germany, in partnership with African countries, with support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). This year’s programme has attracted more than 75 participants from 30 countries around the world.
The gathering places Rwanda at the centre of international discussions on the evolving role of museums, heritage institutions and historical sites in society. Participants are expected to engage in discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions focusing on museums, heritage, history and cultural and natural sites.
According to the Rwanda Cultural Heritage Academy (Inteko y’Umuco), the programme provides an important opportunity for participants to exchange knowledge and professional experience while building stronger networks and partnerships in the heritage sector.
The programme also seeks to encourage new perspectives on how museums can go beyond preserving objects and historical records to become spaces for learning, dialogue, innovation and community engagement.
Through interactions among participants from different countries and professional backgrounds, MuseumsLab 2026 is expected to facilitate the exchange of practical experiences and ideas that can strengthen the management and interpretation of heritage.
The programme further highlights the growing importance of international cooperation in safeguarding cultural and historical resources while ensuring that museums remain relevant to present and future generations.
For Rwanda, hosting the programme provides an opportunity to showcase its heritage sector and engage with international professionals on approaches to preserving history, promoting cultural identity and using heritage institutions as platforms for education and sustainable development.
