DAR ES SALAAM, June 10 (Xinhua) — Tanzanian police have killed seven suspected armed robbers who were on a mission to ambush a bus in the country’s northwest region of Kagera bordering Rwanda and Uganda, police said on Wednesday.

“The killed suspects were found in possession of a military firearm with 11 rounds of ammunition and a hand grenade,” said Revocatus Malimi, the Kagera regional police commander.

Malimi told a news conference in the Bukoba municipality that the suspects were killed in Biharamulo district on Tuesday after an exchange of fire with the police.

“The police received a tip-off that a group of armed gangsters was organizing to waylay a bus along the Biharamulo-Kigoma highway,” he said.

Malimi added that police rushed to the area and rounded up the suspects who started to fire at the police after they realized that their mission had been bungled.

“The police responded by firing at the suspects, injuring them seriously,” said Malimi, adding that the suspects died on the way to hospital. Enditem
