Rwanda and Madagascar Deepen Diplomatic Ties as Minister Biruta Holds High-Level Talks with Foreign Minister Alice N’Diaye
Rwanda and Madagascar have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation after Rwanda’s Minister of Interior Security, Dr. Vincent Biruta, held high-level talks with Madagascar’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alice N’Diaye, during celebrations marking the island nation’s 66th Independence Anniversary in Antananarivo.
Dr. Vincent Biruta, Rwanda’s Minister of Interior Security, represented President Paul Kagame at Madagascar’s 66th Independence Day celebrations held on June 28, 2026, in the country’s capital, Antananarivo.
Madagascar gained independence from France on June 26, 1960, and commemorates the historic milestone annually with national celebrations. Rwanda joined the people and government of Madagascar in honoring the occasion, reflecting the strong friendship and growing partnership between the two African nations.
On the sidelines of the celebrations, Dr. Biruta met with Madagascar’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alice N’Diaye, for discussions focused on further strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across key sectors.
According to a statement released by the Embassy of Rwanda in South Africa, the two ministers explored new opportunities to deepen collaboration and reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing a mutually beneficial partnership.
“The discussions underscored the determination of Rwanda and Madagascar to continue enhancing bilateral relations based on cooperation that serves the interests of both countries,” the statement said.
During his official visit, Dr. Biruta also met with members of the Rwandan community living in Madagascar, conveying Rwanda’s continued commitment to maintaining close ties with its citizens abroad and encouraging them to remain active contributors to the country’s development.
The engagement aligns with the Government of Rwanda’s broader policy of strengthening relations with the Rwandan diaspora and promoting their participation in national development initiatives.
Rwanda and Madagascar have enjoyed steadily growing diplomatic relations in recent years, underpinned by cooperation in various sectors. In 2023, the two countries signed investment and trade cooperation agreements aimed at reinforcing and effectively implementing an earlier framework signed in 2019, further paving the way for stronger economic and commercial partnerships.
