Unknown illness paralyses children in Kayonza

Nine children from Kayonza District in Mwiri Sector in Rugeyo Village are suffering from an unknown illness that has left them paralyzed, TOPAFRICANEWS has learnt.

According to media report, one died and doctors say the illness has not yet been identified since tests are underway on suspicion of vitamin deficiency among the affected children.

One parent said her baby was born just like everyone else, and then at the age of four her legs began to twist and she was taken to Gahini Hospital six times after which she was transferred to Kigali for special treatment.

Rugeyo Village leader John Ndagano told IGIHE that many doctors had come and said that the disease was caused by a lack of vitamins.

Ndagano said that looking at how the illness has affected these children and how they are becoming more and more incapacitated, they deserve advocacy so that the disease can be identified, he said, adding that many patients in their families have no means for their children treatments.

The director of Gahini Hospital, Dr Ngabire Nkunda Phillipe, said the illnesses is yet known but based on the findings it is caused by a lack of substance that strengthens muscles.

Kayonza District Vice Mayor for Social Affairs, Harerimana Jean Damascène, said they are going to follow up on the children and find out they can be helped
