Kagame, Suluhu, AfDB Boss discuss Railway projects linking Rwanda to regional Countries

OUR REPORTER

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu and Akinwumi Adesina, Nigerian economist who is currently serving as the President of the African Development Bank have discussed how to work together to advance regional railways projects linking Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and DRC.

The renowned leaders on the African continent met and discussed the issue at the sideline of the EU-Africa summit which took place from 17-18 February 2022 in Brussels, Belgium.

In the past the East African community currently extending to the Democratic Republic of Congo as a new member of the bloc, announced the East African Railway Master Plan as a proposal for rejuvenating existing railways serving Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and extending them initially to Rwanda and Burundi and eventually, to South Sudan, Ethiopia and beyond.

East Africa’s ambitious standard gauge railway line linking the port of Mombasa to the landlocked countries in the region has fallen behind schedule largely due to financing constraints, doubts over its economic viability, the cost of construction and indecisiveness on the part of some partner states to build their respective sections.

AfDB President Akinwuni hopes that “With their remarkable vision and leadership, we will get it done!”. He was emphasizing the much awaited railway that will link Rwanda to regional countries.
