United States Provides $424 Million in Aid for Democratic Republic of the Congo

In a recent press release, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a significant amount of aid for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The aid package includes nearly $424 million in humanitarian and health assistance to address the ongoing crisis in the country.

This assistance includes $414 million in humanitarian aid to support those affected by conflict and displacement in the DRC. Additionally, an extra $10 million will be allocated to respond to the current mpox outbreak in the DRC and other affected countries in the region. USAID will also be donating 50,000 mpox vaccines to help combat the outbreak in the country.

The aid will be used to provide urgent food assistance, healthcare, nutrition support, shelter materials, and water, sanitation, and hygiene services to crisis-affected communities. It will also support child protection services and gender-based violence prevention and response activities for the most vulnerable populations.

The United States remains the largest provider of humanitarian assistance to the DRC and the largest bilateral donor to the country’s health sector. In Fiscal Year 2024 alone, the U.S. provided over $256 million in health assistance through programs such as PEPFAR, PMI, and the Global Health Security program.

With this latest announcement, the total U.S. humanitarian assistance in the DRC for Fiscal Year 2024 now exceeds $838 million. The U.S. government continues to stand by refugees and the Congolese people, urging other donors to join in efforts to save lives and alleviate suffering in the country.
