New Chairperson of Rwanda Media Commission Elected
By Ange de la Victoire DUSABEMUNGU
On November 15, 2024, Scovia Mutesi, Managing Director of the popular YouTube Channel Mamurwagasabo, was elected as the new Chairperson of the Rwanda Media Commission (RMC). Mutesi takes over from Cleophas Barore, the Director General of the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA), who is widely praised for his stability in Rwanda’s media landscape.
Mutesi, known for her outspokenness on issues concerning social justice and the well-being of society, now faces the task of leading the RMC in ensuring ethical standards are upheld in the journalism profession. With a background in journalism and a strong following among the public, Mutesi is seen as a voice for both the people and journalists in Rwanda.
President Paul Kagame of Rwanda has recently told Mutesi that he follows what she airs on her social media platforms.
One of the key challenges Mutesi will have to address is the issue of unlicensed journalists operating in the country. The RMC has recently begun issuing new Press Cards to ensure that only qualified individuals are practicing journalism. So far, at least 200 individuals have been issued cards that meet the commission’s requirements.
As Mutesi steps into her new role, she will have to navigate the complex media landscape in Rwanda while upholding the values of integrity and professionalism. With her passion for social justice and commitment to ethical journalism, Mutesi and her Team are poised to make a significant positive or negative impacts as the new Management of the Rwanda Media Commission.
Mutesi will be viced by Jean Pierre Uwimana who retained this position, while Xavera NYIRARUKU was elected as the Secretary.
