Somalia Strengthens Diplomatic Ties at High-Level OIC Summit in Turkey

By A. Yusuf

Istanbul, Turkey – June 21, 2025
– A senior delegation from the Federal Government of Somalia, led by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Abdisalan Abdi Ali, has arrived in Istanbul, Turkey, to participate in the 51st Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The high-level summit, which officially opened today, brings together foreign ministers from across the Muslim world. It aims to enhance Islamic unity, strengthen joint action, and foster deeper political and economic cooperation among OIC member states.

Discussions at this year’s session are expected to focus on a wide range of pressing global and regional issues, including ongoing conflicts, humanitarian challenges, and emerging threats to peace and development in the Islamic world.

The conference provides a platform for strategic dialogue and policy coordination aimed at safeguarding the shared interests of member nations.

As the host country, Turkey plays a central role in advancing the goals of the OIC and facilitating constructive engagement among participants.

Ankara’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy is reflected in its ongoing support for strengthening solidarity across the Islamic world.

Somalia’s active involvement in such a major diplomatic gathering marks a significant step in its return to the international stage.

After decades of civil conflict, political fragmentation, and institutional collapse, Somalia is gradually re-establishing itself as a crucial player in global and regional affairs.

Political analysts and observers have welcomed this development.

“Somalia is making a steady comeback after the collapse of the central government in 1991, which set the country back for over thirty years,” said one expert. “Its re-engagement in international diplomacy is a strong indicator of a country on the path to stability, reconstruction, and reintegration into the global community.”

By participating in the Istanbul summit, Somalia ensures its commitment to building strong diplomatic ties, reviving its foreign policy presence, and working alongside fellow Islamic nations to address common challenges and pursue shared opportunities for peace and progress.
