CMA Board Appoints Mr. KAREKEZI Ngabonziza (Eric) as Acting Chief Executive Officer

The Board of Directors of the Capital Market Authority (CMA) Rwanda has appointed Mr. Eric Ngabonziza Karekezi as Acting Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. This appointment ensures continuity of leadership as the Board advances its process to select and appoint a permanent Chief Executive Officer.
In his capacity as Acting CEO, Mr. Karekezi will guide the Authority through this transitional period while maintaining momentum on CMA’s strategic priorities to foster a transparent, well-functioning, and resilient capital market in Rwanda.
In confirming the appointment, the Board expressed its full confidence in Mr. Karekezi’s leadership capabilities and reaffirmed its trust in the professionalism and commitment of the CMA team to sustain strong institutional performance.
Professional Background
Mr. Karekezi is a seasoned finance executive with more than twenty years of experience across leading global financial institutions and public-sector leadership.
His career spans roles at J.P. Morgan, HSBC, BNP Paribas, and UBS, where he developed deep expertise in market infrastructure, securities services, custody operations, innovative financing, and digital finance.
Most recently, Mr. Karekezi served as Head of Market Development at CMA, where he led initiatives to strengthen the market’s institutional foundations and enhance the flow of capital toward productive investment opportunities.
Prior to joining CMA, he held the position of Technical Advisor in the Office of the Deputy Governor at the National Bank of Rwanda, where he supported digital transformation and market development priorities, including work on Central Bank Digital Currency and broader digital finance strategy.
His international experience includes positions at UBS Luxembourg, BNP Paribas Securities Services, and HSBC Securities Services. He also participated to a regional innovative-financing program with the European Commission (DG DEVCO) in partnership with COMESA, the East African Community, IGAD, and IOC member states.
Education and Professional Development
Mr. Karekezi holds an Executive Master’s in Management from Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management and a Master’s in Marketing from Coventry University. He has also completed executive programs in Open Banking and Finance for Regulators at Cambridge Judge Business School and in FinTech at the National University of Singapore.
