Huye: Sovu Industrial Zone Brings New Hope to Local Residents

Residents of Huye District have expressed satisfaction with the steady development of the Sovu Industrial Zone, saying it is expected to significantly improve their livelihoods, particularly through job creation and local economic growth.

These remarks come as Huye District authorities reaffirm their commitment to strengthening the industrial zone by investing in key infrastructure designed to enable industries to operate efficiently and increase productivity.

Located in Huye Sector, the Sovu Industrial Zone has already attracted a number of industries involved in agro-processing, manufacturing, and other industrial services. Local residents say the impact of this development is gradually becoming visible in their daily lives, especially among young people seeking employment.

Nsengiyumva Jean de Dieu, a resident of Huye Sector, said the industrial zone has restored hope within the community. “The establishment of these industries here in Sovu is a major step forward for local residents. Some young people have already secured jobs, and we believe that as more industries come in, employment opportunities will continue to grow,” he said.

Mukamana Vestine, a farmer from Sovu Cell, noted that the industrial zone will also help farmers access reliable markets for their produce. “We used to farm without knowing where to sell our harvests. Now we are confident that the industries will provide a stable market, which will ultimately improve our living standards,” she explained.

The Mayor of Huye District, Ange Sebutege, said the Sovu Industrial Zone is a key pillar of the district’s economic development strategy, emphasizing that concrete measures are being taken to ensure its continued growth.
“The Sovu Industrial Zone is one of the foundations of Huye District’s development. We are continuously investing in essential infrastructure such as roads, water, and electricity to enable industries to operate smoothly and sustainably,” Mayor Sebutege said.

He added that the district is working closely with various institutions to support investors operating in the zone, with the goal of increasing the number of industries, expanding employment opportunities, and boosting overall production.

Industrial zones across Rwanda were established by the government as part of a broader strategy to accelerate national development and promote small- and medium-sized industries. Construction of the Sovu Industrial Zone began in 2016, and in 2017 it was further strengthened under the National Strategy for Transformation (NST1) to enhance productivity and economic impact.

Both residents and local authorities agree that the continued development of the Sovu Industrial Zone will play a critical role in improving household incomes, expanding employment, and driving sustainable economic growth in Huye District.
