Gakenke,— Community sports activities across Gakenke district are proving to be a powerful catalyst for social transformation, promoting public health, discipline, and unity among residents. Local leaders joined citizens of all age groups in mass sports sessions, including jogging and physical fitness exercises, emphasizing a collective commitment to wellbeing.
The initiative has moved beyond mere physical exercise, serving as a platform for significant public awareness and behavioral change. Participants are encouraged to integrate physical activity into their daily lives to prevent non-communicable diseases, improve mental health, and boost productivity.
Residents who participate regularly are already reporting tangible benefits. Jack Niyonzima, a dedicated attendee, shared how the activities have transformed his daily life. “Before joining community sports, I used to feel constantly tired, but regular exercise has improved my energy levels and my overall health,” he explained.
Mukamana Aliella highlighted the positive social impact, stating, “Community sports have helped me connect with my neighbors. We motivate each other, and this has strengthened unity and friendship within our community.”
Furthermore, the gatherings are used to reinforce key public messages, including the Isuku Hose (Cleanliness Everywhere) campaign. Habimana Emmanuel, a father of three, noted that participants are constantly reminded that “a healthy body goes hand in hand with a clean environment,” stressing the importance of maintaining cleanliness in homes and public spaces for disease prevention.
The activities are particularly impactful among the youth. Uwimana Kevin, a young participant, credited the program with instilling focus and responsibility. “When I am engaged in sports, I avoid drugs and bad peer pressure. Sports teach us discipline and respect for our future,” he said. Similarly, Berwa Diane pointed out that regular physical activities have helped her “build confidence and make responsible choices, including avoiding unplanned pregnancies.”
The sessions also sensitize the community on the dangers of drug abuse and the necessity of responsible lifestyles. Participants acknowledged that the combination of sports with continuous civic education has positively shifted attitudes, especially among young people.
These ongoing mass sports initiatives across Gakenke district are demonstrating the transformative role of community engagement in building a healthier, more disciplined, and resilient society.
