House Break-in in Agatare Village Sparks Renewed Calls for Security Intervention After Resident Strangled and Robbed

KIGALI—A resident of Agatare Village, Gasharu Cell, Kinyinya Sector, Gasabo District, narrowly escaped a violent home invasion and robbery that occurred in the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 31, 2026, prompting urgent demands for intervention from the Rwanda National Police (RNP) and other security organs.
The terrifying incident unfolded around 3:24 AM when the victim sent a desperate plea for help in a community chat, stating, “Good morning! Please help me, thieves are robbing me in the house”. Hours later, the victim confirmed they were safe but severely traumatized, describing the attack: “They strangled me and stole, but I am alive, no problem”.
The community discussion that followed highlighted a pervasive sense of helplessness, with one respondent noting the overwhelming difficulty of calling the night patrol (“irondo”) during such a terrifying moment. The chat thread concluded that the problem of thieves “seems to be unresolved” and urged authorities to take action.
Rising Insecurity Confirmed by Authorities
This recent act of violent burglary reinforces long-standing security concerns in Agatare Village. Residents have consistently been reporting an increase in theft since 2022-2023, with cases including women being robbed of their handbags and shoes, as well as forceful phone robberies and burglaries. This has led to a persistent feeling of insecurity in the community.
The local Village Administration has previously acknowledged that the problem is persistent and that the number of reported incidents continues to rise. The surge in criminal activity in parts of Kinyinya Sector has been partly linked to the relocation of individuals from high-risk settlement areas like Kangondo, where it is believed some thieves and bandits may have previously been hiding.Call for Immediate Action
