Kagame and Samia Bolster Strategic Ties During High-Level Talks in Dar es Salaam

President Paul Kagame of Rwanda arrived in Dar es Salaam on Sunday, 3rd May 2026 for a high-profile working visit aimed at cementing the growing economic and diplomatic partnership between Rwanda and Tanzania.

Upon his arrival, President Kagame was received with full honors before heading to the State House for a closed-door meeting with his host, President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The discussions focused heavily on the “central corridor” logistics chain, which remains the primary artery for Rwandan trade, as the Port of Dar es Salaam currently handles the vast majority of Rwanda’s international cargo.

Both leaders reviewed the progress of the Standard Gauge Railway project, a multi-billion dollar infrastructure initiative designed to link the Tanzanian coast directly to Kigali, which is expected to slash transport costs and boost regional integration.

Beyond commerce, the heads of state deliberated on the volatile security situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, seeking a unified regional approach to restore stability under the framework of the East African Community.

This visit comes at a significant moment as Tanzania continues to register record-breaking investments from Rwandan firms, particularly in the manufacturing and financial sectors, which have created thousands of local jobs.

The one-day mission reinforces the shift toward deeper bilateral reliance and sets the stage for upcoming regional summits intended to harmonize trade policies and cross-border security protocols across the Great Lakes region.
