Gakenke District Opens Its Doors to Global Partners in Powerful Push for Child Protection and Education

Gakenke District welcomed a high-level delegation of ambassadors and representatives from Germany, Canada, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and UNICEF Rwanda for a field visit aimed at assessing the impact of UNICEF-supported programs transforming the lives of children and vulnerable families across the district.

Led by the Mayor of Gakenke District, Mukandayisenga Vestine, the visit highlighted the district’s growing progress in strengthening education, child protection systems, early childhood development, and support services for survivors of violence.

The delegation toured several key facilities, beginning with EP Gakenke Protestant, where they observed ongoing efforts to improve remedial learning and ensure that every child has access to quality education regardless of their background or learning challenges.

At the Future Hope ECD Center located at ADEPR Gakenke, the visitors witnessed firsthand the importance Rwanda continues to place on Early Childhood Development (ECD). The center showcased initiatives focused on nurturing children during their formative years through proper nutrition, early learning, psychosocial support, and community-based care. The delegation praised the collaborative efforts between local authorities, educators, parents, and development partners in building a strong foundation for the next generation.

The field visit also took the delegation to ISANGE One Stop Center at Nemba District Hospital, a critical facility providing integrated services to survivors of gender-based violence and child abuse. Health professionals and local authorities briefed the visitors on the center’s role in offering medical care, psychosocial counseling, legal support, and protection services under one roof. The discussions emphasized the importance of strengthening coordinated systems that safeguard the dignity, rights, and wellbeing of survivors.

Rwanda continues advancing people-centered development. The visit served as a powerful reminder that meaningful partnerships and community-driven action remain essential pillars in protecting children, expanding opportunities, and creating lasting social transformation.
