Azali Assoumani Secures Reelection as Comoros President
The incumbent President of the Comoros, Azali Assoumani, won the presidential election with more than 60% of the vote, according to preliminary results released Tuesday by the country’s Independent National Electoral Commission.
At a press conference, the commission announced that Assoumani received 33,209 votes, accounting for 62.97 percent of the total votes, while Salim Issa Abdallah of the Juwa party came in second with 20.26 percent.
Despite the low election turnout of 16.3 percent, the commission praised voters in a press release, stating that they carried out their duties in a calm and serene environment. It also praised the mobilization of all those involved in the election process.
The first round of the presidential election in the Comoros began on Sunday, with six candidates, including Assoumani, competing for the position of national leader for the next five years. Registered voters from a population of approximately 900,000 cast ballots at 868 polling stations across the country.
