OIF Secretary General Calls for Peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
The Secretary General of the Organization of French-Speaking Countries (OIF), Louise Mushikiwabo, has urged the warring parties in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to abide by the decisions made to end the conflict.
Mushikiwabo’s call for peace came during her attendance at the General Assembly of Members of the Parliament of the Member States of the OIF in Canada.
The conflict in the DRC began in late 2021 between the armed group M23 and the RDC army. Despite talks held in Nairobi, Kenya and Luanda, Angola in the following year urging both sides to cease fighting and engage in negotiations, the conflict persisted.
Mushikiwabo emphasized the importance of all parties respecting decisions made through various agreements in order to achieve lasting peace.
President João Lourenço of Angola also expressed efforts to facilitate a meeting between the involved parties to find a sustainable solution to the conflict on June 27, 2024. As Secretary General of Francophonie, Mushikiwabo reiterated her desire for peace in the region.
