Congolese refugees flee to Rwanda as fighting escalates in Goma

Congolese refugees have re-entered Rwanda, fearing the ongoing fighting in the city of Goma. The conflict between M23 fighters and FARDC, FDLR, SADC, and Wazalendo forces continues in various parts of the city, with the most intense gunfire heard at the airport and its outskirts.

Residents fleeing from areas like Birere, Majengo, and Mabanga have chosen to seek safety in Rwanda. They describe a harrowing situation where they have been trapped in their homes for days without access to food or water, only hearing gunshots. Many express uncertainty about who is currently in control of Goma due to the continued violence.

Amidst the chaos, reports indicate that FARDC soldiers are looting food from the community and resorting to fighting in civilian clothing. Refugees arriving in Rwanda feel relieved to have escaped the conflict, as the situation in Goma appears dire with no end in sight.

As hundreds of refugees cross into Rwanda through the main border crossing between Goma and Gisenyi, Rwandan immigration authorities are welcoming them with open arms. With the borders of Goma left unguarded, more Congolese refugees may seek refuge in Rwanda as the fighting persists.

Rwanda has already taken in around 500 refugees from Goma, but this number could rise as the situation worsens. Residents fear for their lives as they witness the violence escalating and the lack of assistance for those injured in the crossfire.
