United States Commemorates 50th Anniversary of the Biological Weapons Convention

March 26, 2025 – Washington, D.C. – In a significant ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the enduring commitment of the international community to eliminate biological weapons. The BWC, which entered into force on March 26, 1975, represents a pivotal moment in global efforts to ban weapons of mass destruction.

Secretary Rubio reflected on the historical context of the BWC, stating, “Fifty years ago, the international community took a historic step toward eliminating biological weapons.” He highlighted the BWC’s role in reinforcing the global norm against the development, production, and use of biological weapons. The convention built upon earlier agreements, including the 1925 Protocol that condemned the use of chemical and biological agents in warfare.

The U.S. has long been a champion of the BWC, having unilaterally renounced biological weapons as early as 1969. Secretary Rubio reaffirmed the United States’ dedication to leading global efforts against biological threats, calling for all nations to unite and redouble their efforts to prevent the proliferation of these dangerous weapons.

As part of the commemoration, Rubio urged all States Parties to the BWC to reaffirm their commitment to the convention and take proactive steps to enhance national and international measures against the development and use of biological weapons. “Our collective security demands no less,” he asserted.

Looking forward, the Secretary expressed optimism regarding collaborative efforts to tackle emerging biological threats, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation and vigilance in an increasingly complex security landscape.

As the BWC observes this landmark anniversary, its mission remains as crucial as ever: to maintain a world free of the fear of biological weapons, ensuring peace and security for all nations. The U.S. pledges to continue leading this vital effort, reinforcing the principles that underpin a safer global community.
