Geneva, April 1, 2025 – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is urgently providing emergency supplies to approximately 25,000 survivors of a devastating earthquake that struck central Myanmar on March 28. As aftershocks continue to rattle the regions of Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw, UNHCR is mobilizing critical relief items from their existing stocks in Myanmar.

At a press briefing today, UNHCR spokesperson Babar Baloch reported that essential supplies, including plastic sheets, sleeping mats, blankets, kitchen sets, and mosquito nets, are being distributed to those most affected by the disaster. “We hope these items can provide some relief during these turbulent times,” Baloch stated.

UNHCR teams are currently conducting an inter-agency rapid needs assessment to identify critical needs in the severely impacted areas, particularly in Mandalay, Magway, and Sagaing Regions. The immediate priorities include deploying shelter and relief items while also monitoring risks associated with explosive ordnance, family separation, child protection, and gender-based violence.

In response to the ongoing crisis, UNHCR has enhanced communication with local communities to address safety concerns and ensure the effective provision of emergency aid. The earthquake and its aftershocks have compounded an already dire situation for many in Myanmar, who have been enduring the repercussions of four years of conflict. The quake-hit regions are home to 45 percent of the nation’s 3.5 million internally displaced persons.

Baloch emphasized the need for unimpeded humanitarian access, advocating for the essential support and resources required to assist communities in urgent need. “The situation is critical, and we must act swiftly to help those who have already suffered greatly,” he urged.

As aid efforts unfold, the international community watches closely, awaiting further updates on the recovery and support for those affected by this natural disaster.
