From Waste to Wealth: AgroPlast Ltd Marks a Landmark Year of Innovation and Environmental Leadership in 2025

KIGALI, Rwanda — As 2025 draws to a close, AgroPlast Ltd has solidified its position as a cornerstone of Rwanda’s circular economy, marking a year defined by national awards, international recognition, and significant technological expansion. From its headquarters in the Gahanga Industrial Zone, the company has spent the last year transforming environmental challenges into sustainable economic opportunities.

National Recognition and Environmental Advocacy

The year’s success was highlighted on June 5, 2025, when the Ministry of Environment honored AgroPlast Ltd during World Environment Day celebrations. Recognized under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution,” the company was lauded for its “outstanding contributions” in converting nationwide plastic waste into viable agricultural and household solutions.

Continuing this momentum, the company also participated in the observances for the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies and the Preservation of the Ozone Layer in September, reaffirming its commitment to eco-friendly manufacturing standards.

Global Spotlight: WFP and Russia Today TV Visits

AgroPlast’s innovative model attracted significant international attention in the final quarter of the year. In October, a delegation from the World Food Program (WFP) toured the Gahanga facility to witness the “innovative processes” that turn discarded plastic into valuable resources like nursery tubing and greenhouse sheeting.

This was followed by a high-profile visit from Russia Today TV, which featured Managing Director Mr. Leon Nduwayezu in a global broadcast. The segment highlighted how the company, founded in 2015, has successfully turned “worthless” waste into raw materials that bolster the local economy.

Revolutionizing Clean Cooking and Energy

A major highlight of 2025 was the rapid deployment of Energy Saving Cookstoves. In partnership with Practical Action, AgroPlast conducted large-scale demonstrations in the Kirehe-Mahama and Kiziba refugee camps.

• The IGISUBIZO Solution: This solar pellet-based cookstove has become a flagship product, designed to eliminate smoke emissions and drastically reduce firewood consumption.
• Industry Leadership: In late November, the company showcased these technologies at the Energy Private Developers meeting in Kigali, engaging potential investors to further regional energy efficiency.

Economic Impact and Social Responsibility

Beyond environmental metrics, AgroPlast reported significant social contributions this year:

• Manufacturing Power: The factory now processes approximately 1.5 tons of plastic waste daily, totaling roughly 540 tons per year.
• Job Creation: The company currently employs 85 workers, including 30 women. Employees like technician Jacques Sibomana noted that the stable income allows staff to afford health insurance and education for their children.
• Community Integration: The company continues to pay individuals in nationwide cooperatives who collect and supply the raw plastic waste to the factory.

Future Outlook: Sustainable Construction

Looking toward 2026, CEO Leon Nduwayezu announced plans to diversify into the construction sector. “These new products will further support sustainable construction and infrastructure development across Rwanda,” Nduwayezu stated, referencing upcoming lines of plastic pipes for electrical installations, pavers, and plastic bricks made from recycled materials.

Through these 2025 milestones, AgroPlast Ltd has proven that sustainability and innovation are not just environmental goals but the primary drivers of Rwanda’s future prosperity.
