Students Supported by the MasterCard Foundation Urged to Embrace Leadership Responsibilities

Students supported by the MasterCard Foundation at the University of Rwanda have been encouraged to embrace leadership responsibilities while still in school, ensuring that they are prepared to face challenges and contribute to the country’s development when they become leaders.

The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program is an international initiative that provides financial support to motivated students who need assistance to pursue their education. The program aims to empower youth, preparing them to become future leaders capable of supporting others and driving national development. In Rwanda, the program works in partnership with the University of Rwanda, offering scholarships, academic support, and mentorship in studies and development projects.

The program’s director at the University of Rwanda, Ass. Prof. Anne Marie Kagwesage, highlighted the unique opportunities it provides for students striving for academic excellence and personal growth: “This program provides exceptional opportunities for students who are eager to learn and excel, while also preparing them for the future of our country,” said Ass. Prof. Kagwesage.

Mr. Gatabazi Pascal, an advisor at the Ministry of Education, praised the partnership between the MasterCard Foundation and the University of Rwanda. He noted that the program reflects the government’s goal of building an inclusive, high-quality education system while contributing to a knowledge-based economy: “Our collaboration with the MasterCard Foundation greatly helps students from disadvantaged backgrounds continue their studies while also investing in high-quality education,” Gatabazi said.

Among the scholars, IGIRANEZA Jean Pierre expressed his gratitude, emphasizing the significance of the opportunity and his commitment to using it not only for personal growth but also to benefit others and the country: “This opportunity is extremely important in my life. I am ready to make the most of it, not only for myself but also to help others and contribute to the development of our country,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Rwanda, Ass. Prof. Kayihura Muganga Didace, reminded the students that they are not only the leaders of tomorrow but also leaders of today. He emphasized the importance of embracing leadership responsibilities early, so that when greater responsibilities arise, they are prepared to handle them effectively: “Do not be leaders of tomorrow only; continue being leaders today. The responsibility of building our country cannot wait for the future,” said Ass. Prof. Muganga.

Since its launch at the University of Rwanda, the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program has supported 970 students across various faculties. The program plans to expand to 1,400 students, including 200 students enrolled through the government’s 4×4 program, which aims to rapidly increase the number of professionals in the health sector.

Students, program coordinators, and university leaders agree that the MasterCard Foundation plays a crucial role in preparing future leaders while supporting students to excel academically and contribute to national development.
