Edgar Sishi Resigns As South Africa’s Budget Chief to Join IMF

Edgar Sishi has been credited for helping South Africa’s National Treasury stabilize public debt.

Edgar Sishi who has been serving as the head of South Africa’s budget office resigned on February 25. He plans to take up a role at the International Monetary Fund.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced last week that South Africa’s ratio of debt to gross domestic will stabilize for the first time in almost two decades this fiscal year.

Stabilisation of national debt according to experts has created space for the Treasury to support anemic economic growth.

It has also strengthened the case for further upgrades to the country’s credit rating — almost a decade after it was first cut to junk.
