Rwandan ECL Graduates Celebrate German Language Milestone, Eye Global Opportunities

Receiving German language certificates on April 19, 2026, marked more than academic success for candidates in Rwanda, it signaled new pathways to education, employment, and global opportunities.

At a ceremony held in Kigali by Der Sprachen Hub | German Language Academy, candidates who successfully passed the European Consortium for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Languages (ECL) exams at B1, B2, and C1 levels were officially recognized, sharing personal stories of persistence, ambition, and transformation.

Egide Ntihinyuzwa, one of the graduates who earned a B1 certificate, described the journey as demanding but rewarding.

“German is like any other language, it requires commitment, time, and consistency. What helped me succeed was the quality training we received and proper preparation,” he said.

Ntihinyuzwa explained that his motivation to learn German was shaped by the opportunities linked to the language, particularly in Germany.

“I became interested after seeing a friend move to Germany in 2021. I realized there are many opportunities, including studying at university under flexible conditions. That inspired me to start learning,” he said, adding that financial constraints had initially delayed his plans.

Ornella Mugisha.

Ornella Mugisha, who also received a B1 certificate, highlighted the role of structured learning and teacher support in achieving success.

“I started learning in August last year and later took the ECL exam. The availability of learning materials and the continuous support from teachers helped me pass,” she said.

For Divine Mugeni, who attained a B2 certificate, the achievement followed an earlier setback.

She said, “I had taken the exam before at another institution but didn’t pass. I decided to continue studying, and after joining Der Sprachen Hub, I succeeded.”

Mugeni says her next goal is to pursue medical studies in Germany, citing the availability of opportunities, including access to affordable education.

Mwizerwa Mulisa, CEO of Der Sprachen Hub | German Language Academy.

Mwizerwa Mulisa, CEO of Der Sprachen Hub | German Language Academy, outlined the growing impact of ECL German examinations in Rwanda, emphasizing how local access is changing the experience for candidates.

He said, “For a long time, students completed their German language courses but faced delays due to lack of nearby examination centers. Some had to travel abroad at high cost. Now, they can access internationally recognized certification here at home.”

Der Sprachen Hub was officially licensed in December 2025 to administer ECL exams, becoming the first institution in East Africa to do so. Since then, uptake has steadily increased.

The first session held in February 2026 registered over 34 candidates, while the April session saw participation double and interest triple, with around 224 exam units conducted. The latest session also introduced the A2 level for the first time in Rwanda, expanding access to beginner learners.

Beyond Rwanda, the exams are drawing candidates from across the region, including Burundi, Uganda, Zimbabwe, and Cameroon, with further interest from Kenya and Tanzania, positioning Kigali as an emerging hub for German language certification.

“ECL certification is widely recognized by German authorities and is often required for processes such as higher education applications, vocational training, and residency procedures,” Mwizerwa said.

The academy has also opened registration for the June 2026 ECL exam session, scheduled for June 12 and 13, as it seeks to build on the momentum and expand access even further.
